Google Rolls Out Gemini Feature For Reading And Responding To Docs Comments

Google has expanded the capabilities of its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant by introducing AI-powered comment workflows in Google Docs. The latest update enables Gemini to read, summarise, and respond to comments within documents, making it easier for users to manage feedback from collaborators. The feature is designed to streamline document reviews by helping users quickly understand discussions, identify pending issues, and generate responses without manually going through every comment thread.

According to Google's Workspace Updates blog, users can ask Gemini to summarise lengthy comment conversations, extract key themes, or highlight unresolved discussions that still require attention. The AI can also draft replies to existing comments and assist users in leaving new comments based on the document's content. Google has shared a demonstration video showcasing how the new comment workflows function within Google Docs.

Beyond comment management, Gemini can suggest updates to the document itself based on reviewer feedback. After analysing comments, the AI generates proposed edits that users can review before approving and applying them to the document. This approach ensures users remain in control of changes while reducing the time required to incorporate feedback from multiple collaborators.

The new capabilities can be accessed through the Gemini side panel or by entering prompts in the bottom query bar within Google Docs. Google has also introduced proactive suggestions that prompt users to summarise comments when opening a document or generate draft replies when selecting an existing comment thread. These contextual prompts are intended to make AI-assisted collaboration more seamless during the editing process.

The Gemini-powered comment workflows are currently rolling out to Google Docs users with edit access and may take up to 15 days to reach all eligible accounts. The features are available for Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Education Plus customers, as well as Google AI Pro for Education users. Individual subscribers to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra will also receive access, further expanding Gemini's integration across Google's productivity ecosystem.
