Hegseth Questioned on Trump's Mental Stability During Capitol Hill Armed Services Hearing
Defence Secretary Hegseth declined to answer Congress on Trump's mental stability during the Iran war.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth faced sharp questioning in Congress over President Donald Trump’s mental fitness to lead the country, producing a heated exchange that quickly went viral on social media. The confrontation came during hearings focused on defence policy and military spending amid heightened tensions involving Iran.
During the Capitol Hill session, Democratic lawmaker Sara Jacobs asked Hegseth whether Trump was “mentally stable enough” to serve as commander-in-chief. Rather than directly answering yes or no, Hegseth challenged the premise of the question and asked whether similar concerns had been raised about former President Joe Biden during his time in office.
Jacobs responded that Biden was no longer president and that Trump had been back in office for more than a year. Hegseth then rejected the criticism, saying he would not engage in what he described as disparagement of the commander-in-chief. He later praised Trump as an “incredible commander-in-chief” who prioritises American troops.

The exchange took place during broader hearings before House and Senate Armed Services committees examining the administration’s proposed 2027 defence budget. The plan reportedly seeks to raise military spending to a record $1.5 trillion, with officials arguing that the increase is necessary to strengthen readiness, modernise capabilities, and address future security threats.
Hegseth defended the proposal by saying it would help reverse years of underinvestment and mismanagement. He highlighted priorities including industrial capacity, advanced weapons systems, troop welfare, higher pay for junior enlisted personnel, and improvements to military housing. Administration officials have framed the package as a long-term reset of US military strength.
The viral moment also comes amid scrutiny of Trump’s recent social media posts concerning Iran and global security. Critics have cited some of his rhetoric as inflammatory, while supporters argue his statements reflect a hardline negotiating posture. The hearing underscored how national security debates in Washington continue to be shaped by both defence policy and the president’s public conduct.
