Thousands Report Instagram Issues Worldwide as Messaging and App Features Malfunction
Thousands report Instagram outage affecting messages and feeds as Meta yet to comment on the disruption.
Thousands of users worldwide reported disruptions on the popular social media platform Instagram on Wednesday morning, with many unable to send or receive direct messages and others facing issues loading feeds or accessing parts of the app. The outage began around 8:45 a.m. IST and quickly triggered a surge of complaints from users across multiple countries, according to real-time monitoring platform Downdetector.
Data from Downdetector indicated a sharp spike in reported problems shortly after the disruption began. More than 10,000 complaints were logged globally, with a large share coming from users in the United States and India. In India alone, hundreds of users reported issues, with roughly 85 percent of them experiencing problems with the mobile application, while about 12 percent reported difficulties accessing the platform through its website. A smaller number of users said their feeds and timelines were not updating.
Many users said the most noticeable disruption involved Instagram’s direct messaging feature, which prevented them from sending or receiving private messages. Some users also reported that their message inboxes appeared empty or that the search and scrolling functions within chats were not working properly.

As the outage spread, users turned to X—formerly known as Twitter—to share their experiences and post memes about the situation. The hashtag #InstagramDown began trending as people joked about the sudden disruption and compared notes on the issues they were encountering.
Several users described unusual behavior on the platform. One person wrote that their message page suddenly showed no conversations despite earlier notifications. Another said the search tool and scrolling features had stopped functioning, making it difficult to navigate messages or find contacts.
Despite the widespread complaints, Meta Platforms, the parent company of Instagram, had not issued an official explanation for the outage at the time of reporting. The cause of the disruption and the timeline for full restoration of services remained unclear.
