Samsung to Unveil New Foldable Phones On July 22, Ahead of Apple's Debut
Samsung to unveil new foldable phones on July 22 in London
Samsung Electronics is set to host its next Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22, where the company is expected to introduce a new generation of foldable smartphones led by the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The South Korean technology giant is reportedly preparing a shorter and wider version of the foldable device, a design that could resemble Apple's planned folding iPhone and give Samsung an early advantage before its rival enters the category.
According to an invitation sent to the media, the event will take place in London and is expected to feature several new devices. Samsung is likely to unveil three foldable smartphones alongside wearable products such as a smartwatch and clip-on wireless earbuds. The company is expected to introduce successors to the book-style Galaxy Z Fold 7 and clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip 7, while adding a shorter, passport-shaped Fold 8 variant as a third option.
The new form factor is expected to offer a shorter and wider display that could provide a more immersive experience for watching videos and improve certain multitasking functions. Samsung's event invitation appears to reference the redesigned device, while the company has also teased the form factor through its social media channels. The addition would expand Samsung's foldable lineup as competition in the still-developing smartphone category intensifies.

Samsung's late-July launch could allow it to build momentum before Apple introduces its first foldable smartphone later this year. The long-awaited device is expected to be among the first major products launched under John Ternus, who is set to become Apple's chief executive officer in September. Samsung was an early pioneer in foldable smartphones, although the category still accounts for only a small share of the overall market compared with conventional smartphones.
Competition is also increasing from Google, which has scheduled its next Pixel hardware event for August 12 in New York. Google is expected to focus more heavily on new software features and artificial intelligence capabilities rather than major external design changes. The company's original Pixel Fold introduced a shorter and wider design, although recent models have moved towards a taller and narrower format.
Samsung enters the launch period after reporting record profit of 89.4 trillion won, or about $58 billion, for the June quarter, representing a 19-fold increase driven largely by the artificial intelligence boom and infrastructure investment. However, the company is also facing higher costs linked to a memory chip shortage. Samsung raised prices for some Galaxy Z Fold 7 configurations in April, raising the possibility that the new foldable models could also arrive with higher price tags.
