IMD Alert: Rain, Hailstorms and Strong Winds to Lash Several States From April 7

IMD warns of rain, hailstorms and strong winds across India from April 7.

Large parts of India are set to witness rain, thunderstorms, and hail over the coming week as two western disturbances move across the country in quick succession, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned. According to the IMD’s latest press release on April 5, the northwest region will experience the peak impact of these disturbances on April 7 and 8.

A western disturbance is currently active over central Pakistan and the neighbouring Punjab region in the lower troposphere. This system is expected to bring widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across northwestern India. The IMD highlighted that a fresh western disturbance will further intensify weather conditions starting April 7, affecting Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand the most. Forecasts predict heavy rainfall in some areas, with thunderstorms and strong winds potentially reaching up to 70 kmph in gusts.

Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are also likely to see rain accompanied by strong winds during April 7–8. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over the Kashmir Valley on April 7. Hailstorms may occur in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana, while Rajasthan could witness thundersqualls due to gusty winds. Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha may also experience similar thundersqualls, with wind speeds reaching 70 km/h.

In the northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds is forecast for the week. Isolated heavy showers may occur on multiple days. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may witness hailstorm activity on April 5, 7, and 8, with heavy rainfall predicted on April 8 and 9. Bihar and Jharkhand could also experience hailstorms from April 6 to 8. Chhattisgarh and parts of Madhya Pradesh are likely to see isolated hailstorms on April 5 and 8, respectively.

Southern states are not entirely spared. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the next five days. Heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala on April 5 and 6.

The IMD also noted that day temperatures across most parts of the country are likely to remain below or near normal throughout the week. While parts of northwest India may witness a temporary rise in temperatures until April 6, a drop of 2–4°C is expected on April 7 and 8. Eastern India could see a fall in maximum temperatures by up to 5°C by April 8.

The meteorological department has issued specific advisories for fishermen. Those venturing into the sea along the West Bengal and north Odisha coasts are advised to exercise caution between April 7 and 9. Similarly, fishing along the Gujarat coast and the adjoining Pakistani coast should be avoided between April 6 and 8 due to rough sea conditions.

With back-to-back western disturbances affecting large parts of the country, residents and authorities are advised to stay updated with local weather forecasts, secure vulnerable property, and take precautionary measures, particularly in hail-prone and flood-prone regions.
