Don’t Delete Your WhatsApp Chats: Simple Ways To Free Up Storage

WhatsApp offers a built-in storage management tool that allows users to free up space without deleting their chat history. The feature is useful for people who receive large numbers of photos, videos, documents and audio files through individual and group conversations. As these files accumulate, they can consume significant phone storage and may also contribute to larger cloud backups and difficulties when backing up or moving WhatsApp to another device.

The storage manager can be accessed through WhatsApp’s Settings under Storage and Data and then Manage Storage. It provides an overview of the space occupied by WhatsApp media and shows which files are taking up the most room. The tool also identifies items larger than 5MB and files that have been forwarded many times, helping users find unnecessary media without having to manually search through every conversation.

To begin cleaning up storage, open WhatsApp on an Android or iOS device and go to Settings. On iPhone, users can access Settings through the You tab in the bottom menu, while Android users can tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner before opening Settings. From there, select Storage and Data, followed by Manage Storage, and open the Larger than 5MB section to review large files.

Users can then select individual files by tapping and holding them or choose Select All if they want to remove multiple items. After reviewing the large files, return to the Manage Storage page and open Forwarded Many Times. This section allows users to identify and delete repeatedly forwarded videos, documents and audio files that may have accumulated across different chats and groups.

WhatsApp also allows users to review storage usage on a chat-by-chat basis. Scrolling through the Manage Storage section can reveal which individual or group conversations are consuming the most space, allowing users to remove selected media rather than clearing an entire chat. Reducing the amount of media stored by WhatsApp can also help reduce the size of backups and the amount of cloud storage required for them.

To prevent storage from filling up again, users can consider disabling Media Auto-Download, particularly if they belong to several active groups. This means photos, videos and other files will need to be downloaded manually when required. However, users should be careful when deleting files through the storage manager because media removed from WhatsApp may also be deleted from the phone’s Photos gallery or Files app. Important photos, documents or other files should therefore be saved elsewhere before they are deleted.
