Apple Plans Two-Wave iPhone Launch with First Foldable Model and Major Upgrades Ahead

Apple plans a two-phase iPhone launch with Pro and foldable models in 2026, followed by standard models in 2027.

Apple is set for its most extensive iPhone refresh to date, with a new launch strategy that splits releases across 2026 and 2027. According to trusted Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman and multiple industry sources, the tech giant will debut the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first-ever foldable iPhone in fall 2026. Then, approximately six months later, the company will introduce more affordable standard models—the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and possibly a refreshed iPhone Air (or iPhone Air 2)—in spring 2027. This phased release marks a significant shift from Apple's typical simultaneous annual launches.

The foldable iPhone appears poised to be a game-changer in Apple’s lineup, building on the iPhone Air's role as a technological testbed. The foldable and Air series share hardware innovations, with the Air acting as a precursor that primes Apple’s production before mass rollout. With lukewarm interest reported for the initial iPhone Air, there is speculation Apple might reconsider or cancel its next Air iteration, but no official confirmation has been made.

This split launch schedule is designed to smooth revenue flow for Apple and reduce pressure on employees and suppliers by spreading out product introductions. Premium models launching in fall 2026 will feature advanced technologies, including Apple’s rumored A20 Pro chip built on 2nm process technology, a smaller Dynamic Island for better display space, improved camera capabilities such as variable aperture lenses, and upgraded connectivity with Apple’s C2 5G modem supporting Wi-Fi 7. These attributes are expected to ensure the Pro and foldable phones appeal strongly to high-end consumers and early adopters.

The more budget-friendly iPhone 18 and 18e arriving in early 2027 will likely aim at wider accessibility and market expansion, possibly benefiting from lowered production constraints in the second launch window. Pricing details remain speculative, but the Pro models are anticipated to start around $1099, with the foldable iPhone potentially exceeding $1999, reflecting the premium segment’s pricing trends.

Overall, Apple’s move toward multiple, staggered iPhone launches could revolutionize its marketing and sales strategy in coming years while introducing exciting innovations and new device categories. Consumers and industry watchers alike can expect a dynamic and innovative iPhone era starting in late 2026.
