Xiaomi 17 Ultra Features 200MP Telephoto, 1-Inch Sensor and Leica-Tuned Optics

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra combines a massive sensor with Leica optics for stunning results.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has drawn attention for its advanced camera system, with the smartphone positioning itself as a device aimed at photography enthusiasts. In today’s smartphone market, camera performance has become one of the most important factors influencing buying decisions. Consumers often test cameras first when exploring a new phone, checking portrait quality, colour accuracy and zoom performance. Against this backdrop, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra attempts to stand out by combining powerful hardware with advanced imaging technologies.

Unlike many smartphones that rely heavily on software-driven computational photography, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra focuses on improving camera performance through high-end optical hardware. The device features a 50-megapixel primary camera with optical image stabilisation, a 200-megapixel telephoto lens capable of up to 120x digital zoom, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens offering a 115-degree field of view. The rear camera system also supports 8K video recording at 30 frames per second, while the front-facing camera offers a 50-megapixel sensor for high-resolution selfies and video calls.

One of the most notable elements of the phone’s camera system is its large one-inch Light Fusion 1050L image sensor. The sensor, which sits within a prominent circular camera module on the back of the device, is believed to be among the largest sensors used in smartphones. With an f/1.67 aperture, the sensor is designed to capture significantly more light than conventional smartphone cameras, allowing the device to produce clearer images in low-light conditions and improve overall image quality.

The camera system also incorporates a technology known as LOFIC, or lateral overflow integration capacitor. This feature helps expand the dynamic range captured by the sensor, enabling it to retain detail in both bright and dark areas of a photograph. As a result, images can preserve clarity across challenging lighting situations, such as when a subject is in shadow while the background is brightly lit.

Another highlight of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is its zoom capability. While many smartphones offer fixed optical zoom levels, the device uses a motorised lens mechanism that provides continuous optical zoom. The system physically adjusts the focal length between approximately 75mm and 100mm equivalents, similar to the operation of a traditional camera lens. This allows users to zoom without losing image quality, avoiding the pixel degradation often associated with digital zoom.

The smartphone also continues Xiaomi’s collaboration with the German camera manufacturer Leica, which contributes to lens design and imaging software tuning. According to independent testing by DXOMARK, the camera system performs strongly across multiple focal ranges, from ultra-wide shots to telephoto zoom. The evaluation noted that the device delivers consistent image quality in photo mode, highlighting the effectiveness of its combination of advanced optics and imaging technologies.
