WhatsApp Web to Log You Out Every 6 Hours: New DoT Rules Force SIM Binding on Telegram, Signal Too

DoT mandates 6-hour web logouts and continuous SIM linkage for WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal to curb cyber fraud.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued directives on November 28 under the Telecommunications (Telecom Cyber Security) Rules, 2024, requiring app-based communication services like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, Arattai, ShareChat, JioChat, and Josh to implement strict SIM binding within 90 days. Classified as Telecommunication Identifier User Entities (TIUEs), these platforms must ensure services link continuously to the active SIM card in the device, preventing operation without it. Web and desktop versions face mandatory logouts every six hours, requiring re-authentication via QR code scan from the phone.

This measure addresses vulnerabilities where apps function post-installation even without the registered SIM, enabling remote cyber frauds like digital arrests from outside India. SIM binding mirrors security in financial apps such as Google Pay, tying accounts directly to physical SIMs—if removed or inactive, the app ceases. Platforms must submit compliance reports within 120 days, with non-compliance risking penalties under the Telecommunications Act, 2023.

Corporate users reliant on persistent WhatsApp Web sessions will face workflow disruptions, needing frequent phone scans for re-entry. International travelers and those with SIM issues may encounter access hurdles during the 90-day rollout. Industry executives note such stringent SIM linkage remains uncommon globally, prompting expected dialogues between OTT firms and DoT to balance security with usability.

The rules aim to safeguard telecom ecosystem integrity amid rising online scams exploiting mobile identifiers. While enhancing cybersecurity, implementation could challenge user convenience, particularly for multi-device users. Platforms prepare adjustments as the deadline nears.
