What To Know About Samsung’s Rumoured Android XR Smart Glasses With Colour Display

Samsung is reportedly preparing to expand its Android XR portfolio with a new pair of smart glasses featuring a colour display. The South Korean technology company is said to be targeting a launch in the second half of next year or the first half of 2028, depending on the development and verification of the display technology. The glasses could use ultra-small microdisplays measuring around 0.2 inches or smaller.

Samsung has reportedly asked its Samsung Display unit to develop microdisplay components for the future wearable. The company is evaluating the display's performance and cost while considering panels that can be integrated into conventional eyeglass frames. The exact configuration remains undecided, with Samsung reportedly weighing monocular and binocular display options for the product.

The rumoured glasses could use limited 4-bit gradation levels rather than standard 8-bit depth, particularly for displaying text and symbols. Samsung is also reportedly considering White (W) OLEDoS as a lower-cost alternative to RGB OLEDoS, while LEDoS technology is also under evaluation. One of the key challenges for the company will be achieving a sufficiently wide field of view across the lens while keeping the display compact.

Before launching the colour-display model, Samsung is reportedly preparing its first Android XR smart glasses without an integrated display. The wearable is expected to arrive later this year and could have a conventional eyewear design similar to Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. It may also feature open-ear audio hardware built directly into the frame, allowing users to access audio without requiring a separate device.

Samsung is developing its Android XR smart glasses in collaboration with Google and eyewear brands including Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The partnership is expected to combine Samsung's hardware capabilities with Google's Android XR platform and the design expertise of established eyewear companies. The initial display-free model could therefore serve as Samsung's entry into a growing category of AI-powered smart glasses.

The reported colour-display model would represent a further step in Samsung's expansion into XR wearables following the launch of the Galaxy XR headset. However, several details, including the final display configuration, panel technology, field of view and launch timing, are yet to be finalised. Samsung's plans remain based on reported development activity and have not been presented as a confirmed product announcement.
