US CBP Arrests 30 Indian Nationals in Arizona Truck Driver Crackdown; All Face Deportation

Thirty Indian nationals with lapsed work permits were detained across Arizona during a federal immigration operation.

Thirty Indian nationals found living and working illegally in the United States as commercial truck drivers have been arrested during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Arizona, according to US authorities. The arrests were part of a broader crackdown targeting individuals allegedly violating immigration and employment laws while operating commercial vehicles across the country.

The operation, named "Operation Checkmate," was carried out by agents of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the US Border Patrol's Yuma Sector between May 11 and May 15. During the enforcement drive, officials detained 52 individuals for alleged immigration violations. Among those apprehended, 36 were identified as drivers of semi-trucks operating within the United States.

According to CBP, 30 of the detained truck drivers were Indian nationals, while the remaining six were citizens of Mexico, El Salvador and Russia. Investigators found that several of the individuals possessed commercial driver's licences issued by various US states, including California, New York, Washington and Virginia. Others were reportedly operating commercial vehicles without holding valid licences.

Authorities stated that many of those arrested had previously obtained employment authorization documents during an earlier administration. However, officials said those documents had expired and were no longer legally valid, resulting in the individuals being classified as unlawfully present and employed in the country. Federal agencies have indicated that all those detained will be processed under existing immigration laws and are expected to face deportation proceedings.

US Customs and Border Protection said Operation Checkmate was specifically designed to enhance public safety by identifying and removing individuals who are unlawfully present in the country while operating commercial motor vehicles. Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin Caudle of the Yuma Sector stated that the initiative reflects ongoing efforts to protect communities and road users from drivers who may not meet legal immigration and licensing requirements.

The operation comes amid heightened scrutiny of commercial transportation and immigration enforcement in the United States. During President Donald Trump's administration, federal transportation authorities directed stricter enforcement measures aimed at preventing unqualified foreign nationals from obtaining licenses to operate commercial trucks and buses. In recent months, several truck drivers of Indian origin have also faced legal action in connection with serious road accidents involving commercial vehicles, adding to concerns surrounding regulatory compliance in the sector.
