Mission 2.0 Focuses on Indigenous Chip Design, Aims to Attract Semiconductor Partners

India’s semiconductor plan emphasizes domestic chip design, inviting partners to expand the country’s tech ecosystem.

The Indian government has announced the launch of Semiconductor Mission 2.0, a renewed initiative aimed at boosting the country’s semiconductor ecosystem. The mission will place a strong emphasis on indigenous chip design, seeking to make India a global hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing.

Officials highlighted that the updated mission will focus on fostering end-to-end chip design capabilities, from research and development to prototyping and production. By prioritising homegrown designs, India aims to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen technological self-reliance in critical sectors.

To achieve this, the mission plans to attract ecosystem partners including semiconductor manufacturers, design houses, research institutions, and startups. These collaborations are expected to accelerate innovation, improve talent development, and build a robust supply chain within the country.

The government has also proposed incentives for companies that set up design and fabrication facilities domestically, along with funding support for research in advanced semiconductor technologies. Experts believe these measures could significantly boost India’s share in the global semiconductor market, which is expected to exceed $1 trillion in the coming decade.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that a strong indigenous chip design ecosystem will benefit not only consumer electronics but also sectors like defense, telecommunications, automotive, and artificial intelligence. “Building domestic capabilities is essential for both economic growth and national security,” said an industry representative.

Semiconductor Mission 2.0 marks a continuation of India’s broader push to strengthen its technology manufacturing base under programs like Make in India and Digital India. With focused efforts on design and ecosystem partnerships, the government hopes to position India as a significant player in the global semiconductor landscape.aa
