Microsoft Turns Windows 11 Into an Xbox at GDC 2026, Teases Next-Gen Project Helix

Microsoft unveiled Xbox Mode for Windows 11 and teased the Project Helix next-gen console at GDC 2026.

Microsoft has announced a new gaming-focused feature called Xbox Mode for PCs running Windows 11, allowing users to navigate and launch games using a controller. The announcement was made during the Game Developers Conference 2026, where the company also teased details about its next-generation gaming console currently under development.

The new feature, described as an “Xbox full screen experience", is designed to transform a Windows PC interface into a console-style dashboard similar to the interface seen on the Xbox. With Xbox Mode enabled, users can access their game libraries through a controller-based interface, making the experience closer to traditional console gaming rather than the standard keyboard-and-mouse PC environment.

According to Microsoft, Xbox Mode will aggregate titles from multiple PC gaming shopfronts into a single interface. Games purchased through platforms such as Steam and Epic Games Store will appear alongside other installed titles, allowing players to browse their entire collection in one place. Users will be able to scroll through games, launch them, and open other apps using a controller, simplifying navigation.

The feature was originally developed with portable gaming handhelds in mind. Devices like the Asus ROG Ally X run on Windows 11 but are designed to deliver a console-like experience for players on the go. Xbox Mode aims to optimise Windows for such devices while also benefiting traditional desktop PCs that are connected to televisions or used as living-room gaming systems.

Alongside the new PC feature, Microsoft also revealed early details about its next-generation console project, internally known as Project Helix. The company said the upcoming console is expected to support PC games in addition to traditional Xbox titles, potentially blurring the line between console and PC gaming ecosystems.

Microsoft indicated that Project Helix will move into its alpha development stage next year, though the company did not provide a launch timeline. In the meantime, the introduction of Xbox Mode for Windows 11 signals the company’s broader strategy to unify gaming across devices, allowing players to access and manage their libraries seamlessly whether they are playing on a PC, a handheld system, or a future Xbox console.
