Meta Eyes Camera-Free Luna Smart Glasses In Fresh Push Toward Privacy-Focused Wearables

Meta is planning to launch a new pair of camera-free smart glasses, internally code-named “Luna”, later this year, according to a report by The Information citing people familiar with the company’s plans. The proposed device would differ from Meta’s existing smart glasses by omitting a built-in camera, at a time when wearable devices capable of recording their surroundings are facing increased scrutiny over privacy and consent concerns. Meta could unveil Luna at its annual Connect developer conference next week, with shipments reportedly targeted for October. The new glasses are expected to retain several of the features that have become central to Meta’s smart-glasses strategy, particularly hands-free access to artificial intelligence.

According to the report, Luna will have six built-in microphones that users can use to communicate with Meta AI as well as Muse, the company’s newly launched consumer AI agent.  The microphone array is expected to allow users to interact with the glasses through voice commands without needing to use a phone or another connected device for basic AI interactions. Luna will also reportedly include a physical button on the side of the frame that can be used to quickly activate Meta AI. The glasses are expected to feature speakers similar to those included in Meta’s current smart-glasses models. This would allow the company to maintain several of the audio and voice-based capabilities of its existing devices while removing the camera component.

The reported design suggests that Meta is focusing on AI assistance and audio interaction as key functions of the new model rather than visual recording. The reported development comes as smart glasses continue to attract attention over how cameras and other sensors can affect privacy in public spaces.  Camera-equipped glasses can allow users to capture photographs and videos without holding a conventional camera or smartphone, but their discreet appearance has also raised questions about whether people nearby can tell when they are being recorded. A camera-free model would remove that particular recording capability while allowing Meta to continue developing wearable AI products.

The company has not publicly detailed all of Luna’s features or confirmed the reported product plans. Meta’s existing smart-glasses lineup has increasingly incorporated artificial intelligence features, allowing users to interact with the devices using voice commands and access digital assistance while on the move. The reported addition of Muse points to the company’s broader effort to make AI agents available across consumer hardware. Unlike a conventional pair of glasses, a wearable device connected to an AI assistant can provide hands-free access to information and other digital functions, making microphones, speakers and voice recognition important components of the experience. According to The Information, Meta could introduce Luna during its annual Connect developer conference scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday.

The company is reportedly targeting October for shipments, although launch timing and other specifications could change before any formal announcement. Meta has not publicly confirmed the Luna name, the reported camera-free design, pricing or final specifications. Details about battery life, connectivity, supported features and regional availability also remain unclear based on the information currently available. If launched as reported, Luna would represent a different approach to the smart-glasses market by concentrating on voice-controlled AI and audio features without including a camera. The move could allow Meta to address some of the concerns associated with wearable recording while retaining the convenience of hands-free AI assistance. The company's upcoming Connect event is expected to provide more information if the device is formally unveiled, including its final name, specifications, pricing and release plans.
