Meta Acquires ARI To Develop Physical AI And Humanoid Robots For Domestic Use

Meta acquires ARI startup to advance humanoid robots powered by physical AI for real-world home tasks.

Meta Platforms has acquired humanoid robotics startup Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI) in a strategic move aimed at accelerating its development of advanced artificial intelligence systems capable of operating in the physical world. The deal value has not been disclosed, but it signals a deeper push by Meta into robotics and “physical AI,” beyond its traditional focus on social media and virtual environments.

According to reports, ARI specialised in building robotic intelligence systems designed to help machines understand, predict, and respond to human behaviour in real-world settings. The startup was working on foundation models for humanoid robots, enabling them to perform complex physical tasks such as household chores. These systems aim to allow robots to function more naturally in human environments by learning from interaction rather than relying solely on pre-programmed instructions.

Following the acquisition, ARI’s core team—including co-founders Xiaolong Wang and Lerrel Pinto—will join Meta’s AI division, known internally as Superintelligence Labs. Wang has previously worked as a researcher at Nvidia and held an academic position at the University of California, San Diego, while Pinto has an academic background in robotics and was previously associated with a startup later acquired by Amazon. Meta said their expertise in robot control and adaptive learning systems will be central to its robotics roadmap.

The move reflects Meta’s growing interest in developing consumer-oriented humanoid robots, although the company has not officially announced any product plans. Industry observers note that Meta has been steadily expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities, and this acquisition suggests a long-term strategy that could combine hardware, software, and AI models to create robots capable of operating in everyday home environments.

Experts in the field argue that progress toward artificial general intelligence may require machines to learn through physical interaction with the real world, not just digital data. Robotics is therefore becoming a key frontier in AI development, where systems must adapt to unpredictable environments and human behaviour. This makes “physical AI” a major area of focus for leading technology companies.

The acquisition also comes amid increasing global competition in robotics, with multiple tech firms investing heavily in humanoid systems. While forecasts for the sector vary widely, analysts believe the market has significant long-term potential despite technical challenges and uncertainty. Meta’s latest move highlights its intention to position itself early in what many see as the next major phase of artificial intelligence evolution.
