Japan Deploys 'Monster Wolf' Robots to Combat Record Bear Attacks; 50 Orders Surge

Japan deploys solar-powered Monster Wolf robots to combat record bear attacks; 50 orders surge amid wildlife crisis.

A bizarre wolf-like robot designed to scare away bears is witnessing massive demand in Japan as the country battles a record rise in bear attacks and sightings. Developed by Hokkaido-based firm Ohta Seiki, the solar-powered “Monster Wolf” robot has emerged as an unusual yet effective solution for farmers and rural communities struggling with increasing encounters with wild bears. Equipped with motion sensors, flashing red LED eyes, and more than 50 terrifying sounds, including wolf howls, barking, machinery noises, and human voices, the animatronic device is specifically designed to frighten away animals before they can attack people or destroy crops.

The “Monster Wolf” resembles a terrifying werewolf-like creature rather than a traditional scarecrow, making it visually intimidating for wildlife. Once its sensors detect movement nearby, the robot activates instantly, producing loud noises while its glowing eyes flash repeatedly to scare intruders away. According to the company, the robot operates through solar power and rechargeable batteries, allowing it to function with almost no maintenance costs after installation. The company says the system can be deployed immediately in farms, golf courses, and rural properties, making it a practical long-term solution for areas regularly affected by wildlife intrusions.

Demand for the robotic scarecrow has surged dramatically in recent months as bear encounters across Japan continue to increase. The company revealed that it has already received nearly 50 orders — far higher than its typical yearly demand. Most customers include farmers, golf course operators, and residents living in remote or forested regions where bear sightings have become increasingly common. Company president Yuji Ohta said the robots are handmade, which has created significant production delays due to overwhelming demand. Customers are currently being asked to wait nearly two to three months for delivery because the firm cannot manufacture the units quickly enough.

Apart from the main robot unit, customers are also required to purchase supporting equipment such as batteries, solar panels, sensors, and installation materials. Labor charges and transportation fees further increase the total cost. Despite the expense, many buyers appear willing to invest in the technology because of growing concerns over public safety and crop damage. The company claims the robot has already proven effective over the past seven years, with several users continuing to rely on it as a permanent defense mechanism against wild animals.

The surge in demand comes amid an alarming rise in bear attacks across Japan. According to official data from Japan’s Environment Ministry, the country witnessed record bear activity in 2025, with sightings crossing 50,000 nationwide—nearly double the previous record set just two years earlier. More than 200 people were reportedly injured in bear-related incidents, while 13 fatalities were recorded, making it the deadliest year on record for such attacks in the country. Authorities say bears are now frequently being spotted near schools, supermarkets, hot spring resorts, and even golf courses, triggering panic among residents.

Last week, Japanese authorities confirmed the first fatal bear attack of 2026 after the body of a 55-year-old woman was discovered in the Iwate prefecture. Wildlife experts believe factors such as habitat loss, climate change, and food shortages in forests are pushing bears closer to human settlements in search of food. As fear grows among communities, innovations like the “Monster Wolf” are increasingly being seen as an important tool to reduce dangerous encounters between humans and wildlife across rural Japan.
