Himanta Biswa Sarma To Be Sworn In As Assam CM On May 12 With New Cabinet

Himanta Biswa Sarma to take oath as Assam CM for second term on May 12 after NDA victory.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath for a second consecutive term on May 12, after being unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP-led NDA legislature party in the state. The announcement follows the alliance’s decisive victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, where the ruling coalition secured a strong mandate from voters.

The National Democratic Alliance, led in Assam by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), retained power for a third straight term in the 126-member state assembly with a two-thirds majority. The BJP won 82 seats on its own, while alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) secured 10 seats each, taking the NDA’s total tally to 102 seats. The result reinforced the coalition’s strong political position in the state.

Senior BJP leadership formally endorsed Sarma’s continuation as Chief Minister during a legislature party meeting, where his name was proposed by multiple party MLAs. Union minister J. P. Nadda congratulated Sarma after the decision, stating that Assam had voted for “development, stability and public welfare” for a third time. He also linked the mandate to the Centre’s broader development vision under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Following his election as leader of the legislature party, Himanta Biswa Sarma met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan to formally stake claim to form the next government. He later submitted his resignation along with his outgoing council of ministers to facilitate the formation of a new administration. The swearing-in ceremony for the new government and cabinet is scheduled to take place on May 12, with several senior leaders expected to attend.

Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP national president J. P. Nadda, as well as NDA legislators, for their support. He said the strong electoral mandate reflected public confidence in the government’s development agenda and reaffirmed his commitment to continue working for Assam’s growth and stability under the Centre’s “double-engine” governance model.

Before joining the BJP in 2015, Himanta Biswa Sarma was a senior leader in the Congress party and served as a minister in the government led by former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Over the years, he has emerged as one of the BJP’s most prominent leaders in the Northeast, and his second-term oath-taking marks a continuation of his leadership role in shaping Assam’s political and developmental trajectory.
