GrapheneOS Explained: Features, Compatibility, and Security Highlights

GrapheneOS offers enhanced privacy, security features on Pixel smartphones.

GrapheneOS, a privacy and security-focused mobile operating system, has gained renewed attention following a recent federal case in Atlanta that reignited discussions around secure smartphone platforms. Built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), GrapheneOS is designed for users who prioritise stronger privacy, enhanced security and greater control over their personal data. The operating system officially supports only Google Pixel smartphones, taking advantage of the devices' advanced hardware security features and Google's long-term firmware support.

Originally launched in 2014, GrapheneOS was previously known as CopperheadOS before evolving into an independent project. Unlike standard Android, it does not include Google apps or Google Play Services by default. However, users can install Google Play Services as fully sandboxed applications without granting them special system privileges. The operating system also introduces additional privacy controls, including network permission management, sensor access controls and options to restrict hardware access while the device remains locked.

GrapheneOS incorporates several advanced security technologies aimed at protecting devices from unauthorised access and cyberattacks. It supports Memory Tagging Extension (MTE), which helps prevent memory-related exploits, and includes protection against unauthorised firmware updates by requiring owner authentication before secure element firmware can be modified. Users can create stronger passwords with support for up to 128 characters and enable optional two-factor unlocking using a combination of fingerprint authentication and a PIN for added security.

The operating system also includes features designed to secure physical access to the device. It blocks new USB data connections while the phone is locked, automatically disables USB data transfer when no active connection exists and offers an automatic reboot feature that returns the device to the "Before First Unlock" state, clearing sensitive information stored in memory. Another notable feature is the optional Duress PIN or password, which securely erases all user data if a preconfigured emergency credential is entered, providing an additional layer of protection in coercive situations.

At present, GrapheneOS officially supports Google Pixel smartphones from the Pixel 6 series through the Pixel 10a. The project states that future compatibility could expand beyond Pixel devices through planned partnerships with Motorola Mobility and Qualcomm beginning in 2027. Older devices, including the Pixel 3 series, original Pixel smartphones, Nexus 6P and Samsung Galaxy S4, were previously supported but have since reached the end of official support. Carrier-locked Pixel devices sold in certain regions may also prevent installation of the operating system.

In addition to its security features, GrapheneOS includes several built-in applications and utilities developed by the project, such as the Vanadium web browser, Android WebView, a PDF Viewer, the Auditor security application and a dedicated Camera app. It also supports Seedvault, an encrypted backup solution, and allows users to transfer files through USB, external storage devices or compatible applications. As interest in digital privacy continues to grow, GrapheneOS has emerged as one of the most recognised alternative mobile operating systems for users seeking enhanced security without abandoning the Android ecosystem.
