Rahane's Captaincy Under Fire: Aaron Finch Says Batting First on Wet Pitch Made No Sense

Finch questions Rahane's logic after KKR chose to bat on a rain-hit pitch.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane has come under intense scrutiny following a controversial decision during his team’s rain-affected clash in the Indian Premier League 2026. Rahane opted to bat first despite overcast conditions and a pitch that had been under covers, a move widely criticised by experts and former players.

The decision raised eyebrows as rain interruptions were anticipated, making bowling first a more strategic option under the circumstances. Even Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer admitted he would have preferred to field first, highlighting the contrast in approach between the two teams during the match at Eden Gardens.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch strongly criticised Rahane’s call, describing it as a decision that “made no sense” given the available conditions. Finch pointed out that the pitch conditions and weather forecast should have clearly influenced the decision to bowl first, especially in a format where early advantages often dictate the course of the game.

Finch further suggested that such misjudgments could stem from overthinking or a lack of clarity in leadership during pressure situations. He compared the situation to a player being out of form, indicating that even experienced leaders can make questionable decisions when their mindset is not fully aligned with match conditions.

Adding to the controversy were Rahane’s recent remarks about critics, where he suggested that those questioning his approach were "jealous". Finch expressed disappointment over the comment, stating that such responses are not ideal for a captain addressing media and public scrutiny, particularly during a challenging phase for the team.

With just one point so far in the tournament, KKR find themselves in a difficult position early in the season. As pressure mounts, Rahane’s leadership and decision-making are likely to remain under the spotlight, with the team needing quick improvements to stay competitive in the tournament.
