Rahane Reveals Manav Suthar’s X-Factor, Backs Spinner To Perform In Any Condition

Ajinkya Rahane has highlighted what makes Manav Suthar stand out as India’s emerging left-arm spin option, pointing particularly to the youngster’s ability to remain effective across different conditions. Suthar has made an impressive beginning to his Test career and has quickly attracted attention for his accuracy, control and variations. His performances during India’s tour of Sri Lanka have strengthened the case for him as a promising long-term option in red-ball cricket.  Suthar’s early numbers have been striking. The 24-year-old claimed 10 wickets in India’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, including a six-wicket haul in the second innings, helping India secure a 165-run victory.

By the end of the second Test in Colombo, he had emerged as the series’ leading wicket-taker, giving India another encouraging development in their spin department. Rahane was particularly impressed by Suthar’s ability to adjust his bowling according to the conditions and the batter. The veteran batter pointed to the spinner’s pace through the air and his understanding of how to alter his speed and angles without losing control. Those subtle adjustments can make it difficult for batters to settle against him, particularly when he maintains the same action while changing the trajectory or pace of his deliveries. 

Suthar’s effectiveness is not based solely on conventional turn. His variations have become an important part of his threat, allowing him to create different questions for batters from a similar bowling action. KL Rahul, who regularly faces him in the nets, previously highlighted Suthar’s ability to change speed subtly and use drift before bringing the ball back into the batter. His consistency, Rahul said, allows him to challenge batters throughout an innings rather than relying on occasional deliveries. That adaptability has been evident in Sri Lanka, where Suthar has shown that he can contribute even when conditions change.  His long-time coach Dheeraj Sharma has also spoken about the preparation that went into ensuring the spinner was ready to perform in different conditions.

Suthar has worked extensively on his straighter delivery, or arm ball, adding another weapon to his repertoire alongside his ability to generate turn and drift.  The importance of Suthar’s control was also evident during his breakthrough performance in Galle. Rather than attempting to force every delivery to turn sharply, he consistently attacked the stumps and maintained disciplined lengths. That approach allowed him to build pressure and wait for batters to make mistakes. His ability to combine accuracy with variations has made his transition to international cricket particularly encouraging. Suthar’s rapid emergence has inevitably led to comparisons with India's established spin options, although his career remains in its early stages.

Former Sri Lanka spinner Russell Arnold cautioned that Suthar still needs to prove himself across a wider range of conditions, despite his excellent beginning. Arnold nevertheless praised his control and suggested that his accuracy could allow him to contribute even on pitches that offer limited assistance to spinners.  For India, the emergence of Suthar provides another option as the team looks to build its next generation of Test spinners. His performances in Sri Lanka have provided an encouraging starting point, while Rahane’s assessment underlines a quality that could prove particularly valuable: the ability to adapt rather than depend on one type of pitch. If Suthar can maintain his discipline and continue developing his variations, his early Test success could become the foundation of a substantial career in red-ball cricket.
