Jayawardene Admits MI’s Plans Failed as Rajasthan Royals Claim Rain-Shortened Win
Mahela Jayawardene admits the Mumbai Indians failed to execute plans.
Mumbai Indians Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted his side fell short in executing plans as Rajasthan Royals triumphed in a rain-shortened IPL clash on Tuesday. The MI coach singled out the challenge of the rain-curtailed conditions, which allowed RR’s batters to attack from the outset. “We had some plans, but I don’t think we executed those. The margins are very small,” he said.
RR posted 150/3 in 11 overs, with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s explosive 77* off 32 balls and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 39-run blitz dismantling MI’s bowling attack. Jayawardene acknowledged that MI’s bowlers struggled to maintain line and length under pressure. Nandre Burger, Sandeep Sharma, and Ravi Bishnoi were particularly effective, combining for six wickets and containing the Mumbai batsmen.
In the chase, MI lost key wickets early, with Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rohit Sharma back in the pavilion within the first five overs. Jayawardene stressed that these early setbacks disrupted their momentum. “We just needed a couple of partnerships. We lost a few early wickets and lost the momentum,” he said.

The MI coach reflected on the narrow margins that decided the match, noting the difference boiled down to just four missed sixes. “If you look at the end, the difference was four sixes. It was four hits for us, but we just couldn’t find that,” Jayawardene said, highlighting the fine line between victory and defeat in T20 cricket.
Jayawardene concluded by commending RR for their performance while acknowledging the work MI still needs to do. “They played a really good game today. We were not good enough, and that’s what we have to work on,” he said, underlining the importance of execution and adaptability in high-pressure scenarios.
