Jason Gillespie: Abused Online, Deletes Post Seeking Clarity on ICC Decision

Gillespie deletes tweet after abuse for seeking understanding on ICC-Bangladesh row

Former Australia fast bowler and ex-Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie has deleted a social media post related to the recent controversy over Bangladesh’s exclusion from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Gillespie had initially posted on X (formerly Twitter) seeking clarity on the decision and the ICC’s reasoning behind it.

The cricketer explained that his post was meant purely to gather information and foster a better understanding of the situation. However, it quickly drew unwanted attention and became a target for online abuse. Gillespie stated that the intensity of the response prompted him to remove the post.

Gillespie clarified that he did not intend to take sides in the matter or publicly criticize the ICC or Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). His intention, he said, was to simply understand the facts and engage in a constructive discussion about the T20 World Cup venue row.

The controversy began when the ICC replaced Bangladesh with Scotland for the upcoming T20 World Cup, citing logistical and political reasons. Gillespie’s post had asked questions about the decision, which many online users misinterpreted, leading to an influx of abusive messages directed at him.

Despite the backlash, Gillespie emphasized that his engagement with cricket issues is always driven by curiosity and respect for the game. He encouraged fans and followers to prioritize informed discussion over personal attacks on social media platforms.

The former cricketer concluded by expressing disappointment over the nature of online abuse in sports debates but maintained his commitment to staying connected with cricket developments worldwide. He also thanked fans who reached out with support and understanding after the incident.
