Heinrich Klaasen and Shreyas Iyer Emerge as IPL's Most Valuable Number Four Batsmen This Season

Klaasen and Iyer emerge as IPL's most valuable middle-order batters in 2026.

Two contrasting middle-order batters, Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings, have emerged as the most influential performers in the middle order during the Indian Premier League 2026, redefining the value of the number four position in T20 cricket.

The number four role is widely regarded as one of the most difficult in the format, requiring batters to adapt instantly to changing match situations. Unlike openers who set the tempo or finishers who accelerate at the end, number four batters must either stabilise early collapses or maintain momentum after a strong start. This season, Klaasen and Iyer have consistently excelled in this high-pressure position.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, Klaasen has brought stability and controlled aggression to the middle order. He has produced key innings such as 52 off 35 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders and 62 off 41 against Lucknow Super Giants, often rebuilding innings from difficult situations. His approach has been defined by adaptability rather than fixation on strike rate, focusing instead on sustaining scoring opportunities based on match conditions.

Klaasen has also shown the ability to shift gears when required. In matches where acceleration was needed from the outset, he responded with explosive knocks such as 65 off 30 balls against Mumbai Indians and 37 off just 13 deliveries against Delhi Capitals. This ability to switch tempo has made him a vital asset for his franchise’s batting strategy.

Meanwhile, Iyer has undergone a different transformation after moving from number three to number four for Punjab Kings. While Klaasen adjusted between control and aggression, Iyer has worked on adding power-hitting to his game while maintaining his natural ability to anchor innings. He has openly acknowledged the influence of younger, more explosive batters on his approach.

Iyer’s impact has been particularly visible in run chases, where he has attacked opposition bowling line-ups from the outset. His scores of 69 off 33 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, 66 off 35 against Mumbai Indians, and 71 off 36 against Delhi Capitals underline his intent-driven batting style. Together, Klaasen and Iyer have quietly redefined the importance of the middle order in modern T20 cricket, proving that adaptability at number four can be as decisive as explosive starts at the top.
