Gautam Gambhir Sets Expectations For Rishabh Pant After Leadership Change
Gambhir urges Pant to adjust after leadership change.
India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant remains an integral part of the team’s leadership group despite losing the Test vice-captaincy, with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate outlining clear expectations from the senior player ahead of the one-off Test against Afghanistan. Pant, who has experienced a challenging period in recent months, stepped down from the captaincy role at Lucknow Super Giants following a difficult IPL season.
He was also subsequently removed from his position as vice-captain in India’s Test setup under Shubman Gill, marking a notable shift in his leadership responsibilities across formats. Despite these setbacks, team management has reportedly made it clear that Pant continues to hold an important presence in the dressing room. Ten Doeschate emphasised that leadership within an elite squad is not dependent on formal titles, and senior players are expected to contribute through example, communication and performance regardless of official roles.
Speaking ahead of the Test, the assistant coach said Pant has shown a positive mindset during the training camp and remains committed to fulfilling responsibilities as a senior member of the squad. He added that internal discussions between head coach Gautam Gambhir and Pant had already addressed expectations regarding his approach and conduct going forward.

Ten Doeschate noted that while Pant’s natural attacking style remains a key asset for the team, there is also an expectation for him to adapt his game according to match situations when required. He suggested that small tactical adjustments could enhance Pant’s effectiveness in longer formats without limiting his natural flair.
The coaching staff has reportedly been encouraging Pant to balance his aggressive instincts with situational awareness, particularly in Test cricket where game management and patience often play a crucial role. However, they continue to view him as a core component of the squad due to his match-winning abilities. Despite the leadership changes, Pant is understood to be in good spirits during preparations and continues to be seen as an influential figure among teammates.
The team management has reiterated that his contributions remain highly valued, both on and off the field, even without an official leadership designation. The developments highlight India’s broader approach of distributing leadership responsibilities within the squad while managing individual roles based on form, conditions and tactical requirements ahead of the upcoming fixtures.
