Cooper Connolly Stars As Punjab Kings Defeat Gujarat Titans By Three Wickets

Connolly stars on debut as Punjab Kings win.

Rising star Cooper Connolly made a spectacular T20 debut as the Punjab Kings edged past the Gujarat Titans by three wickets in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday. Connolly’s composed 56 off 34 balls proved instrumental in steering his team to victory in a tense final over.

The Titans, batting first, posted a competitive 175/7, thanks to a brisk 68 from Shivam Dube and crucial contributions from Wriddhiman Saha and Rashid Khan, who added a late 28-run cameo. Punjab’s bowling attack, led by Arshdeep Singh and Ravi Bishnoi, kept the scoreboard in check, but the Titans maintained a slight edge heading into the final ten overs.

In reply, Punjab got off to a shaky start with early wickets falling, placing pressure on the middle order. Connolly’s debut innings showcased exceptional temperament, blending aggression with patience. He forged crucial partnerships with Shikhar Dhawan and Fawad Alam, guiding the team through tense phases and steadily chipping away at the required run rate.

The climax arrived in the 20th over, when Punjab needed 18 runs off the last six balls. Connolly struck a boundary off the third delivery and then calmly hit two sixes to seal a dramatic three-wicket win, earning the Player of the Match award for his match-winning debut. His performance has instantly made him one of the IPL’s most promising new talents.

Team captain Shikhar Dhawan praised Connolly after the match, stating, “It’s not easy to debut under pressure, especially in a chase like this. Cooper showed maturity beyond his years and gave us the perfect platform to win.” Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya acknowledged the Titans’ competitive fight but admitted that the middle-order collapse cost them the match.

With this win, Punjab Kings start the IPL 2026 season on a high, while Gujarat Titans will look to regroup ahead of their next fixture. Connolly’s memorable debut has set high expectations for the young Australian all-rounder, who could become a key figure in the Punjab batting lineup throughout the tournament.
