Bumrah is the Best All-Format Bowler, But His Test Heroics are Still Questioned
Alastair Cook questions if Bumrah can replicate a devastating Test spell like Stuart Broad's 8/15.
Former Alastair Cook has raised questions about whether India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah can deliver devastating match-winning spells in Test cricket similar to some of the sport’s most iconic performances. Cook’s remarks came shortly after Bumrah played a key role in India’s triumph at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, where the pacer finished among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers and produced a decisive performance in the final.
Speaking on the cricket podcast Stick To Cricket, Cook acknowledged that Bumrah is currently one of the best bowlers across all formats of the game. However, he questioned whether the Indian quick has produced a dominant Test spell comparable to the famous 8/15 delivered by Stuart Broad during the 2015 Ashes against Australia. According to Cook, while Bumrah’s consistency and effectiveness are undeniable, the discussion remains whether he can deliver the type of extraordinary spell that single-handedly dismantles a batting lineup in the longest format.
Cook’s comments came during a wider discussion about modern fast bowlers and their impact across formats. The former England captain noted that Bumrah’s record and reputation already place him among the most influential bowlers of his era. Yet he posed the question of whether the Indian star fits the mould of bowlers who produce dramatic, game-defining bursts in Test cricket that remain etched in cricketing history.

During the same conversation, former England captain Michael Vaughan offered a contrasting perspective and spoke highly of Bumrah’s achievements. Vaughan described the Indian pacer as the best bowler he has seen in modern cricket, comparing his dominance to global sporting icons such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. According to Vaughan, Bumrah’s ability to influence matches across formats makes him one of the most remarkable cricketers of the contemporary era.
Bumrah recently played a pivotal role in India’s successful campaign at the T20 World Cup, where he claimed 14 wickets across the tournament. In the final, he produced a decisive four-wicket spell that helped India defend their total against New Zealand national cricket team. His performance was widely praised for dismantling the opposition’s chase and maintaining pressure throughout the innings.
India ultimately secured a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The win allowed the India national cricket team to successfully defend their T20 World Cup title, marking the first time a team has retained the trophy while also becoming the first side to lift the tournament on home soil. Bumrah’s contribution in the tournament, particularly in the final, reinforced his status as one of the most influential bowlers in world cricket today.
