Yuki Bhambri Makes Grand Slam History at US Open Doubles

Fourth Indian man in the Open era to reach the doubles semifinal; falls to sixth seeds.

India's Yuki Bhambri and his partner Michael Venus advanced to the semifinals of the US Open men's doubles, marking Bhambri's best-ever Grand Slam performance, before falling 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 4-6 to the sixth-seeded British duo of Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury in a gripping encounter. The 33-year-old from Delhi etched his name in history as only the fourth Indian man in the Open era to reach a Grand Slam doubles semifinal, joining the ranks of Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Rohan Bopanna.

Throughout the tournament at Flushing Meadows, the Indian-New Zealand pair delivered standout results, including upsets over higher-seeded teams like the fourth-seeded Germans Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz, as well as the 11th-seeded Rajeev Ram and Nikola Mektic, highlighting Bhambri's rising profile in doubles after injuries hampered his singles career.

Bhambri's campaign underscored his resilience and skill, as the duo's impressive run demonstrated their ability to challenge top-tier competition. Reflecting on the achievement, Bhambri said, "This has been a special week for me. To be playing at this level and in the semifinals of a Slam is a big moment," emphasizing the personal significance of the milestone amid a strong season for Indian tennis, following Rohan Bopanna's successes on the tour.

For Bhambri, who has faced numerous injury setbacks over the past decade, this semifinal finish represents a pivotal breakthrough, boosting his rankings and providing crucial momentum for the remainder of the season. His performance not only showcases his tactical prowess but also signals a potential turning point, allowing him to build on this experience in future events.
