Who is Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's Likely Next Supreme Leader After Father's Killing

Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the slain Supreme Leader, is set to lead Iran after US-Israel strikes.

Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei is reportedly set to become Iran’s next Supreme Leader following the killing of his father, Ali Khamenei, in a joint strike attributed to the United States and Israel. According to Israeli media reports, Iran’s 88-member Assembly of Experts selected Mojtaba to assume the country’s highest political and religious office. The development marks a pivotal moment for the Islamic Republic, which has been led by Ali Khamenei since 1989.

Born in 1969 in Mashhad, Mojtaba is the second-eldest son of the late Supreme Leader and one of six siblings. He grew up during a period of political upheaval as his father emerged as a prominent cleric opposing Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The 1979 Islamic Revolution dramatically altered the family’s trajectory, placing them at the centre of Iran’s newly established theocratic system. The Khamenei family subsequently became deeply embedded in the country’s political and religious institutions.

After relocating to Tehran, Mojtaba attended Alavi High School, an institution often associated with individuals linked to the Islamic Republic’s leadership. He later pursued religious studies in Qom, Iran’s principal centre for Shia scholarship, under conservative clerics. Despite decades of seminary education, he has not attained the rank of ayatollah, a qualification traditionally associated with candidates for the position of supreme leader under Iran’s constitution. His clerical standing has therefore been a subject of debate among senior members of the clergy.

During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, Mojtaba reportedly served in the Habib Battalion, where he forged connections with figures who later rose to prominence within Iran’s security and intelligence apparatus. Over the years, he has been described by analysts as wielding influence behind the scenes, particularly within conservative political circles and segments of the Revolutionary Guard, though he has rarely held formal public office.

The role of Supreme Leader in Iran carries sweeping authority over the armed forces, judiciary, state broadcasting and key political appointments. The Assembly of Experts, an elected clerical body, is constitutionally responsible for appointing and overseeing the Supreme Leader. If confirmed, Mojtaba’s elevation would represent a significant consolidation of leadership within the Khamenei family and could shape the direction of Iran’s domestic and foreign policy during a period of heightened regional tensions.

The reported succession comes amid escalating geopolitical strains in the Middle East following the strike that killed Ali Khamenei. While Iranian authorities have yet to issue detailed public statements on the transition, the selection of Mojtaba signals continuity within the Islamic Republic’s ruling establishment. Observers say the coming days will be critical in determining how Iran navigates both internal political adjustments and its broader international relationships.
