West Indies vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI Washed Out; Sri Lanka Retain 1-0 Series Lead

Rain washes out Kingston ODI; Sri Lanka retains series lead over West Indies.

Persistent rain forced the abandonment of the second One-Day International between the West Indies and Sri Lanka at Sabina Park in Kingston on Saturday, significantly affecting the hosts' chances in the three-match series. Continuous showers throughout the day prevented any cricket from being played, resulting in the match being called off without a single ball being bowled despite efforts by officials to wait for improved weather conditions.

The only activity possible before the washout was the toss, which was won by West Indies captain Shai Hope. Hope elected to field first, taking into account the weather forecast and the possibility of rain interruptions later in the day. However, conditions failed to improve, and match officials eventually declared the contest abandoned, leaving both teams with one point each.

The washout means Sri Lanka retain their 1-0 lead in the series after securing a 41-run victory in the opening ODI. As a result, West Indies can no longer win the series outright. The Caribbean side's best possible outcome is now to level the series when the two teams meet in the third and final ODI scheduled to be played at the same venue on Monday.

The abandoned match is a setback for West Indies as they continue their pursuit of crucial ICC ODI ranking points. Every match carries added importance with qualification for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup dependent on teams' rankings by March next year. A series victory would have boosted the hosts' position, but the rain-affected result has reduced their opportunities to gain valuable points.

Both teams had announced changes to their playing elevens before the weather intervened. West Indies included Amir Jangoo in place of the injured Matthew Forde, while Sri Lanka handed an opportunity to Eshan Malinga, who replaced Asitha Fernando. Despite the lack of on-field action, there was a special moment for Shai Hope, who was presented with a commemorative jersey ahead of his 150th ODI appearance for West Indies.

Sri Lanka entered the match with momentum following a strong performance in the series opener. The visitors posted 303 for 7, thanks to half-centuries from captain Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka, before bowling out West Indies for 262. Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera played a key role with four wickets in the victory. The final ODI will now determine whether Sri Lanka seals the series or the West Indies manages to salvage a draw while improving their ranking prospects.
