Viswanathan Anand Becomes FIDE Interim President Following EU Sanctions on Dvorkovich

Five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand has assumed the role of interim president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) following European Union sanctions imposed on current FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich. The leadership change comes after Dvorkovich was included in the European Union's 21st sanctions package targeting individuals linked to Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. FIDE has temporarily transferred presidential responsibilities to Anand while the situation is addressed under the organisation's governance framework.

The European Union's sanctions list alleges that Dvorkovich used his position as FIDE president to advance Russian interests in ways that undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The sanctions form part of broader restrictive measures adopted by the EU in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine. Dvorkovich, who served as Russia's Deputy Prime Minister from 2012 to 2018, has led FIDE since winning the federation's presidential election in 2018.

Anand, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in chess history, became FIDE Deputy President in 2022 after joining Dvorkovich's leadership team during the federation's elections held at the FIDE Congress in Chennai. His appointment followed a successful campaign in which Dvorkovich secured a second term as FIDE president. Since then, Anand has played an active role in the federation's administration alongside his contributions to the global promotion of chess.

As interim president, Anand is expected to oversee the federation's day-to-day operations and ensure continuity in FIDE's activities, competitions, and governance. The Indian grandmaster won the World Chess Championship five times and has remained an influential figure in the sport through coaching, mentoring, and administrative responsibilities. His experience and international standing are expected to help guide the federation during the current period of uncertainty.

The leadership transition comes at a significant time for international chess as FIDE continues to expand the game's global reach through major tournaments, youth development initiatives, and digital platforms. While the sanctions have introduced an unexpected governance challenge, the federation is expected to continue its scheduled activities under Anand's interim leadership until a longer-term decision regarding the presidency is made.
