Virat Kohli Explains Reasons Behind Leaving India Test Captaincy In 2022

Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has spoken in detail about his decision to step down as India’s Test captain in 2022, saying the demands of leadership and batting responsibilities together left him mentally and physically exhausted by the end of his tenure.Kohli resigned as India’s Test captain in January 2022, a day after India lost the Test series 1–2 in South Africa.

His decision came after he had already stepped down from T20I captaincy and been replaced as ODI captain, marking the end of a highly successful leadership era in Indian Test cricket. Under his captaincy, India won 40 of 68 Tests and established a dominant record at home and strong performances overseas.Reflecting on his time as captain during a recent interaction at the RCB Innovation Lab, Kohli said he gradually became the central figure in both leadership and batting, which placed an overwhelming burden on him.

He explained that his intense commitment to keeping Indian cricket competitive at the highest level meant he did not initially recognise the toll it was taking on him personally.Kohli described the period leading up to his resignation as emotionally and physically draining, stating that by the time he stepped down, he felt “completely spent” and “consumed” by the responsibilities he carried.
