Vinesh Phogat Asian Games Trials: Defeat in Semi-Final But Olympic Dream Remains Very Much Alive
Vinesh Phogat lost her Asian Games trials semi-final but vowed to pursue Olympic glory.
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has vowed to continue pursuing her Olympic dream despite suffering a major setback in her comeback bid after losing in the semi-finals of the Asian Games selection trials. The defeat ended her hopes of securing a place at the upcoming Asian Games and marked a disappointing return to competitive wrestling following a lengthy absence from the sport.
Competing in the 53 kg category at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, Vinesh was making her first appearance on the mat since her highly publicized disqualification at the Paris Olympics. In a closely contested semi-final bout, she was defeated 6-4 by Meenakshi Goyat. The loss brought an abrupt end to her campaign, despite months of preparation and determination to return to elite competition.
The road to the trials itself was far from straightforward for the decorated wrestler. Vinesh had to pursue legal remedies to secure an opportunity to compete in the 53kg category. Following the defeat, she expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court for ensuring that she received a fair chance to participate. She also highlighted the daily challenges she has faced while balancing her sporting ambitions with motherhood and personal responsibilities.

Reflecting on her journey, Vinesh said her family, support team, and the encouragement she receives from across the country continue to motivate her during difficult periods. She noted that caring for her young child has helped her remain focused and avoid distractions, providing emotional strength amid criticism and setbacks. The wrestler described the battle to return to competition as both physically and mentally demanding.
Vinesh also spoke about broader issues affecting athletes in India, particularly women competing in physically demanding sports. She argued that stronger institutional support could help athletes overcome obstacles and achieve greater international success. According to her, India's potential to win Olympic medals can be significantly enhanced when sportspersons receive consistent backing during challenging phases of their careers.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on the Asian Games, Vinesh made it clear that retirement is not currently on her mind. She reiterated her belief that she remains capable of winning an Olympic medal and said that her passion for wrestling continues to drive her forward. The former world championship medalist stated that she will continue competing for as long as she feels capable, insisting that any future decision to leave the sport will be made on her own terms rather than because of external pressure.
