Usain Bolt Says His Sprint Records Safe for Now, Predicts Jamaican 1-2 at Worlds

Usain Bolt says sprinters can’t break his records but predicts a Jamaican sweep at the upcoming World Championships.

Usain Bolt, the iconic Jamaican sprinter, expressed confidence that his world records in the 100 meters (9.58 seconds) and 200 meters (19.19 seconds), set at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, remain secure for now. Speaking at a Puma event in Tokyo on Thursday, ahead of the World Athletics Championships—his first in-person attendance since retiring in 2017—Bolt said he sees no immediate threat from today’s top sprinters.

Since Bolt’s record-breaking performances, only compatriot Yohan Blake has come close, running 9.69 in the 100 meters and 19.26 in the 200 meters. American Noah Lyles, the 2023 double sprint world champion, has openly targeted Bolt’s marks, aiming for 9.65 and 19.10. However, Lyles’ fastest 200-meter time remains 19.31, set in 2022. Bolt acknowledged the ambition but emphasized execution, predicting a Jamaican one-two finish in the 100 meters by Kishane Thompson (9.75 this year) and Oblique Seville.

Bolt noted the emergence of 17-year-old Australian sprinter Gout Gout, whose 6-foot frame and times draw comparisons to a young Bolt. “It’s always easy when you’re younger,” Bolt cautioned, stressing the challenges of transitioning to senior competition and the need for proper coaching. Gout’s recent 10-second 100-meter run at Japan’s Inter High School Championships has fueled speculation about his potential.

Technological advancements, such as improved track surfaces and shoes, make Bolt’s records vulnerable in the long term, he admitted. A Puma study suggested he could have run 9.42 in 2009 with modern footwear. “Everything evolves,” Bolt said. “It’s not going to be a surprise if it happens.” For now, his records stand firm as the athletics world watches the next generation chase his legacy.
