Underdog Sweden Eyes Historic Upset Against Tournament Favorites France

France takes on Sweden in high-stakes World Cup knockout football.

France will look to continue their FIFA World Cup title charge when they take on Sweden in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, with Didier Deschamps' side entering the knockout clash as one of the tournament favourites. The French team has impressed throughout the group stage with its attacking quality, while Sweden faces the difficult challenge of containing one of the competition's most dangerous forward lines. Elsewhere, Norway will meet Ivory Coast, and co-hosts Mexico will take on Ecuador as the knockout stage gathers momentum.

France's attack has been among the standout performers of the tournament. Kylian Mbappe has already scored four goals, while Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele produced a hat-trick in France's commanding 4-1 victory over Norway during the group stage. Michael Olise has also played a key role with his creativity and pace, giving France multiple attacking options. Although France has looked dominant going forward, questions remain over its defensive consistency as the competition enters the high-pressure knockout rounds.

Sweden will rely on its own attacking threats to challenge the 2018 world champions. Premier League forwards Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres are expected to lead the line, although both are still searching for their best form in the tournament. Sweden reached the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams despite suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands during the group phase. The team had also taken an unusual route to qualification after earning a playoff opportunity through its UEFA Nations League performances.

France coach Didier Deschamps has warned his players against underestimating Sweden despite the difference in expectations. He said knockout football leaves no room for mistakes and stressed the importance of maintaining concentration throughout the contest. Deschamps noted that Sweden has nothing to lose and will fight for survival, making the encounter potentially more challenging than many expect. The winner of the match will face Paraguay, who produced one of the biggest surprises of the tournament by eliminating Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Sweden coach Graham Potter acknowledged the quality of the French squad and described the fixture as one of the biggest challenges his team could face. He said Sweden would need to produce its best performance of the tournament to have any chance of advancing. The Scandinavian side will hope disciplined defending and clinical finishing can help overcome the tournament favourites, while France aims to continue its pursuit of a third World Cup final appearance in the last three editions.

In Tuesday's other major fixtures, Erling Haaland will lead Norway against Ivory Coast after being rested in the defeat to France during the group stage. Norway coach Stale Solbakken praised Haaland's leadership and described him as one of the world's best players, highlighting his natural goalscoring instinct. Co-hosts Mexico will also be backed by a passionate home crowd at the Estadio Azteca when they face Ecuador, knowing that victory would keep them in the capital for a quarter-final against either England or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
