Turkey Coach Montella Refuses Resignation, Hits Back at Fans for Heckling Young Squad

Montella refuses resignation, defends young Turkey squad against fan backlash.

Turkiye head coach Vincenzo Montella has ruled out stepping down despite his team's early exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026, insisting he remains fully committed to the national side. Speaking ahead of Turkiye's final Group F match against co-hosts the United States at SoFi Stadium, the Italian manager defended his players and criticised the harsh treatment they have received from sections of supporters following consecutive defeats that ended their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Montella said he has no intention of resigning, stressing that he still possesses the energy and enthusiasm to continue leading the team. The 51-year-old acknowledged the disappointment surrounding Turkiye's campaign but maintained that one difficult tournament should not overshadow the progress made under his leadership. He added that if anyone expected him to walk away from the role, they would have to accept that he intends to remain in charge.

Turkiye's World Cup campaign ended after a 2-0 defeat to Australia and a 1-0 loss to Paraguay. Although the team failed to score in either match, Montella pointed to several positive performance indicators, claiming his side dominated many statistical categories, including possession, shots and individual duels. He argued that while the numbers reflected strong performances, football is ultimately decided by goals rather than statistics.

The coach also appealed to supporters and the media to show greater respect towards the squad, many of whom are expected to form the core of the national team for years to come. Montella revealed that a small group of angry fans verbally abused the team when it arrived at its hotel in Los Angeles, with some directing personal criticism at him, Turkish Football Federation president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu and captain Hakan Calhanoglu. He said the actions of a handful of supporters should not overshadow the backing received from many others throughout the tournament.

Young winger Kenan Yildiz echoed his coach's views, saying the players were frustrated because their performances deserved better results. The 21-year-old said Turkiye had entered the tournament with high expectations and believed the team had played well in both matches despite failing to convert chances. He added that football often rewards efficiency rather than overall dominance, making the early elimination particularly disappointing.

Montella took charge of Turkiye in September 2023 and guided the team to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024 before leading the nation back to the World Cup for the first time since 2002. With the support of the Turkish Football Federation and his players, he said his immediate focus is ending the tournament on a positive note against the unbeaten United States. Montella expressed confidence that the team will remain motivated and continue building towards future international competitions despite the setback in North America.
