Teen Star Vaibhav Suryavanshi Aims to Emulate Shubman Gill’s Marathon Batting
Youngest Centurion in Youth ODIs Draws Inspiration from India Test Captain
At just 14, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has set the cricketing world abuzz with a blistering 143 off 78 balls, becoming the youngest and fastest batter to score a century in Youth ODIs during India U-19’s match against England in Worcester on Saturday. The teenage prodigy credits India Test captain Shubman Gill for inspiring him to aim for longer, match-defining innings.
“I got a lot of inspiration from him because I saw the game. After making 100 and 200, he didn’t leave the game and took the team ahead,” Suryavanshi said in a BCCI video posted on X, referring to Gill’s monumental 269 and 161 in the ongoing Birmingham Test. The India U-19 squad witnessed Gill’s epic double century at Edgbaston, fueling Suryavanshi’s ambition.
“I will try to make 200 in the next match and play the full fifty overs. The more runs I make, the better for my team,” he added. Suryavanshi, who partnered with Vihan Malhotra for a 219-run stand, regretted his dismissal in the 28th over, believing caution could have extended his innings. “I could have batted longer; there were 20 overs left,” he said, pinpointing a shot where he didn’t give his all.

Unaware of his record-breaking feat until informed by team manager Ankit, Suryavanshi was thrilled to contribute to the team. “I’m happy I’ve done something good. I’ll talk to my family and friends,” he said. With Gill as his role model, the young left-hander is set on scripting more marathon knocks.
