Suryansh Shedge Earns First India Call-Up as Nitish Reddy Misses T20I Series

Young batter earns India call-up ahead of T20I assignments.

Punjab Kings all-rounder Suryansh Shedge has received his maiden call-up to the Indian national team after being named as a replacement for the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy in the squads for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England. The selection marks a significant milestone in Shedge's career and comes on the back of strong recent performances in domestic and representative cricket.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Nitish Kumar Reddy will miss both series due to injury. The all-rounder reportedly experienced discomfort in his left quadriceps following the third ODI against Afghanistan on June 20. Subsequent medical examinations conducted by the BCCI Medical Team led to the recommendation that he undergo a period of rehabilitation before returning to competitive cricket.

Reddy's absence is a setback for the Indian team, given his growing importance as a pace-bowling all-rounder. The management had viewed him as a valuable option capable of contributing with both bat and ball in the shortest format. However, the decision to prioritise recovery is aimed at ensuring the player returns to full fitness without risking further complications.

Shedge earned his opportunity after impressing selectors with his performances for India A during the recently concluded tri-series in Sri Lanka. The all-rounder delivered consistent contributions throughout the tournament, showcasing his ability to impact matches in multiple roles. His performances strengthened his case for national selection and ultimately resulted in his promotion to the senior squad.

The call-up represents a major breakthrough for the Punjab Kings player, who has steadily built a reputation as a promising all-round talent. Known for his aggressive batting and useful medium-pace bowling, Shedge offers balance to the squad and adds another versatile option to India's T20 setup as the team prepares for a busy international schedule.

India's upcoming T20I assignments against Ireland and England are expected to provide opportunities for emerging players alongside established stars. With Nitish Kumar Reddy sidelined through injury, attention will now turn to Suryansh Shedge as he looks to make a successful transition to international cricket and justify the selectors' faith in his abilities.
