Sumit Antil Allege Mental Harassment by Javelin Coach, Neeraj Chopra Expresses Solidarity
Top javelin athletes allege abuse, file complaint against coach.
Top Indian javelin throwers, including Sumit Antil and Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, have filed a formal complaint against javelin coach Naval Singh, alleging mental harassment and abusive behaviour. The complaint was submitted to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on April 10, according to reports, raising serious concerns about the coach’s conduct with elite athletes.
Antil, a two-time Paralympic medallist, claimed that the coach repeatedly used abusive language and engaged in inappropriate behaviour, especially around competition periods. He alleged that Naval Singh would send offensive audio recordings while intoxicated, targeting athletes and their families. The complaint reportedly includes such recordings as evidence, with claims that multiple athletes were subjected to verbal abuse.
The issue was initially raised with SAI officials and the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), following which a written complaint was formally lodged. Antil stated that he had earlier approached senior officials, including SAI representatives, but was dissatisfied with attempts to resolve the matter through compromise. He emphasised that the alleged behaviour had crossed acceptable limits, citing repeated instances of humiliation and mental distress.

Backing the complaint, Chopra expressed solidarity with fellow athletes and called for strict action, stressing that sports must uphold dignity and respect. The athletes have alleged that despite multiple complaints, no significant action has been taken so far. The controversy has brought renewed attention to athlete welfare and accountability within India’s sports coaching system, with calls for a thorough investigation into the allegations.
