Steve Smith Accepts T20 World Cup Snub: ‘That Ship Has Sailed’
Australian star Steve Smith concedes no place in 2026 T20 World Cup squad.
Australian Batting Maestro Steve Smith has candidly addressed his exclusion from Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, admitting that his chances of featuring in major T20 international tournaments have likely passed. Despite his explosive form in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 for the Sydney Sixers—where he smashed a century and a half-century in recent matches, amassing 346 runs at a strike rate nearing 180—selectors overlooked the 36-year-old veteran. Smith, who hasn’t played a T20I for Australia since February 2024, acknowledged the strong performances of the current opening pair as a key factor in the decision.
In a refreshingly honest response, Smith stated, “I always want to play for Australia in big tournaments. But I think that ship has sailed. I reckon they’ve got two opening batters that are doing pretty well. I’m relaxed doing what I can here and having some fun.” His comments came amid speculation fueled by his recent heroics, including a blistering 42-ball hundred and consistent contributions that helped the Sixers secure a top-two finish in the BBL. Chief Selector George Bailey has kept the door slightly ajar, noting Smith’s adaptability and value in case of injuries, but emphasized the team’s settled top order with players like Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head.
Smith’s reinvention as a power-hitting opener in domestic T20 cricket has been impressive, showcasing his ability to adapt after retiring from ODIs to focus on shorter formats and franchise opportunities. However, the selectors’ preference for explosive, modern T20 specialists has left little room for his inclusion in the preliminary 15-man squad for the tournament, set to begin in February 2026 across Sri Lanka and India. He remains philosophical, prioritizing enjoyment in the BBL over dwelling on the omission.

Looking ahead, Smith has shifted his ambitions to a fresh goal: representing Australia in T20 cricket at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the format will make its return to the Games. “My main goal, as I’ve said before, is to get on the team when the Olympics are rolling around. I’d be keen to do that. That’d be pretty cool,” he expressed.
This forward-looking mindset highlights his enduring passion for the game despite the setback. The snub has sparked debate among fans and pundits, given Smith’s pedigree and current form, but his graceful acceptance underscores a mature approach to evolving team dynamics in T20 cricket.
