Spanish Businessman Riquelme Challenges Perez for Real Madrid Presidency Election

Spanish businessman Enrique Riquelme announces candidacy for Real Madrid presidency, challenging incumbent Florentino Pérez in upcoming election.

Spanish businessman Enrique Riquelme has publicly announced his intention to challenge long-serving Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez in the club’s upcoming presidential election. Riquelme, who heads the water and energy group Cox, informed the club’s electoral committee of his willingness to stand as a candidate through a formal letter that was published by several Spanish media outlets. If his candidacy is officially submitted before the deadline, he would become the first challenger to contest Perez’s leadership in years.

Candidates interested in entering the presidential race have until May 23 to formally register their nominations. Under Real Madrid’s electoral rules, candidates must have been club members for at least 20 years and provide a financial guarantee worth 15 percent of the club’s annual budget. According to reports, the required guarantee currently stands at approximately 187 million euros, backed through personal assets. If more than one candidate completes the process successfully, the club’s electoral board will organize a formal vote among members.

Riquelme, 37, has emerged as one of the most prominent business figures to express interest in leading the Spanish football giants during a period of increased scrutiny over the club’s recent performances. Although he has not yet formally filed his candidacy, his public declaration signals a potentially rare contested election at Real Madrid. The businessman’s move has generated significant attention within Spanish football circles because Perez has largely remained unopposed in recent elections and continues to wield enormous influence within the club.

Perez, 79, first became president of Real Madrid in 2000 and was widely associated with the club’s famous “Galactico” era, which brought several global football stars to Madrid. He resigned in 2006 before returning to power in 2009 after standing as the sole candidate in that election. Since then, Perez has been re-elected unopposed in 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2025, consolidating one of the longest and most influential presidential tenures in modern football administration.

Under Perez’s leadership during his second spell, Real Madrid have enjoyed a highly successful period, winning multiple domestic and European titles, including five La Liga championships and six UEFA Champions League trophies. However, the club is set to finish the current season without winning a major trophy for the first time since the 2020-21 campaign. The disappointing season has intensified debate among supporters regarding the future direction of the club and the need for possible changes in management and long-term planning.

The possibility of a contested presidential election could mark a significant moment in Real Madrid’s recent history, as competitive races for the club’s top position have become increasingly rare. Football analysts believe any formal challenge to Perez would likely focus on issues such as squad rebuilding, sporting strategy, financial management, and the club’s future after a trophyless campaign. Attention is now centered on whether Riquelme will officially complete the nomination process before the deadline and force a vote among Real Madrid’s membership base.
