Spain Target France Showdown With Quarter-Final Victory Over Belgium At World Cup

Spain chase France clash with Belgium awaiting test.

Spain will look to book a blockbuster FIFA World Cup semi-final against France when they face Belgium in the quarter-finals on Friday at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The European champions have impressed with their defensive solidity throughout the tournament and are now just one victory away from a highly anticipated clash with Kylian Mbappe's France. A win over Belgium would send Spain to Texas for a semi-final next Tuesday against the French, a fixture many observers have already labelled the "final before the final" given the quality of both sides. However, Spain must first overcome a Belgian team that has gathered momentum after a slow start to its World Cup campaign.

Belgium head into the quarter-final buoyed by an emphatic 4-1 victory over hosts the United States in the Round of 16. The performance under head coach Rudi Garcia highlighted the team's improvement as the tournament has progressed, with Belgium rediscovering its attacking rhythm after an inconsistent opening phase. Spain, meanwhile, have relied more on control and defensive discipline than attacking flair. Luis de la Fuente's side has adopted the possession-based style that helped Spain win its only FIFA World Cup title in South Africa in 2010. While they have not matched France's explosive attack, they have been one of the tournament's most organised teams.

Defensively, Spain have been outstanding, conceding just six shots on target across five matches while yet to allow an opposition goal. Their disciplined backline has provided the platform for consistent performances, making them one of the strongest defensive units remaining in the competition. Much of the spotlight will again fall on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. The Barcelona winger, who turns 19 next week, entered the tournament after recovering from a late-season injury and has not yet reached the level many expected. Yamal has scored only once in five matches and has played a relatively subdued role compared with his club performances.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente acknowledged that the youngster is yet to produce his best football at the World Cup but remains confident he can make a decisive impact. "We know that the best version of him, the attacking Lamine, is something that we haven't quite seen yet in this World Cup. Not to the level that we're used to," De la Fuente said ahead of the match. In Yamal's absence as Spain's primary attacking threat, Mikel Oyarzabal has stepped up impressively. The forward has scored four goals during the tournament, including a brace in Spain's commanding 3-0 victory over Austria in the Round of 16 at the same venue. His form has helped compensate for Spain's relatively modest attacking output.

Belgium will be tasked with becoming the first team to breach Spain's defence in the tournament while also containing a midfield renowned for controlling possession. The outcome could hinge on whether Belgium's resurgent attack can break through Spain's disciplined backline or if the European champions continue their efficient march toward another World Cup title challenge. With France already waiting in the semi-finals, Friday's quarter-final promises high stakes as two European heavyweights battle for the chance to set up one of the tournament's most anticipated encounters.
