Spain, France Seal 2027 Women's World Cup Spots as England Face Play-Off Anxiety
Spain and France qualify for Brazil as England miss automatic World Cup spot.
World champions Spain and France secured automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil on Tuesday after topping their respective European qualifying groups. While both nations celebrated direct entry to the tournament, reigning European champions England were left disappointed despite recording a comfortable victory over Ukraine, forcing them to take the longer route through the play-offs.
Spain confirmed their place at the World Cup with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Iceland in Reykjavik. Vicky Lopez starred with a brace, while Edna Imade, Salma Paralluelo, Claudia Pina and Aitana Bonmati also found the net in a dominant display. The convincing win ensured Spain finished at the top of Group A3 and maintained their status as one of the leading contenders heading into the global tournament in Brazil.
France also booked their place at the World Cup after edging past the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Grenoble. Melvine Malard scored the decisive goal shortly before half-time with an impressive acrobatic finish. Despite being reduced to 10 players in the final 20 minutes after Thiniba Samoura received a second yellow card, the French side held firm to secure victory and first place in Group A2 ahead of the Netherlands.

England, meanwhile, completed their qualifying campaign with a 3-0 win over Ukraine in Liverpool. Goals from Jess Carter, Georgia Stanway and Beth Mead helped Sarina Wiegman's side finish strongly in front of more than 26,000 supporters at Everton's stadium. However, the result was not enough to secure automatic qualification because Spain won their match and retained top spot in the group.
The Lionesses entered the final round of matches needing Spain to either lose or draw against Iceland to have a chance of finishing first. Since only the group winners qualified directly for the World Cup, England's hopes depended on results elsewhere. Iceland's lone goal came through Linda Boama, but it did little to prevent Spain from claiming a commanding victory and sealing qualification.
With the European qualifying phase concluding, Spain and France have secured their places at the 2027 Women's World Cup, while England must now navigate the play-off stage to reach the tournament. The results underline the competitiveness of European qualification, where even established powers can face an additional hurdle despite strong performances throughout the campaign.
