Spain Captain Rodri Reportedly Faces Back Surgery After World Cup Victory

Spain captain Rodri is reportedly set to undergo back surgery, which could result in another spell on the sidelines for the midfielder after an already difficult period with injuries. The 30-year-old played a key role in Spain’s FIFA World Cup triumph, earning the Golden Ball award for being named the tournament’s best player. However, concerns over his fitness have returned following reports of a new back issue requiring medical intervention.

Rodri was a central figure in Spain’s successful World Cup campaign, providing stability and control in midfield throughout the tournament. He featured in all eight matches for La Roja as Spain secured their second global title. His performances once again highlighted his importance at both club and international level, but his injury history has raised concerns over his long-term availability.

The Manchester City midfielder previously suffered ligament damage in September 2024 after an incident that initially appeared minor. The injury kept him out for most of the 2024-25 season. His return was later affected by additional hamstring and groin problems, restricting him to 33 appearances across all competitions, including only 17 Premier League starts.

After returning to action for Manchester City, Rodri struggled to regain his previous level of influence. Former City manager Pep Guardiola had acknowledged that the midfielder may have returned too quickly following his long injury absence. The latest setback comes with only one year remaining on Rodri’s current Manchester City contract, adding further uncertainty over his future.

According to reports, Rodri is interested in a possible return to Real Madrid, with his successful World Cup campaign increasing support for such a move. Manchester City have already strengthened their midfield options by signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, a move that could help the club manage Rodri’s potential absence.

Rodri’s situation could also influence transfer decisions involving Real Madrid midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga. Several Premier League clubs have shown interest in the pair, with Manchester United previously linked with Tchouameni and Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal reportedly monitoring Camavinga. However, any potential moves will depend on whether the players and Real Madrid are open to negotiations.
