Spain Beat France 2-0 To Equal Unbeaten Record, Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Final

Spain beat France to match Italy's unbeaten record, reach final.

Spain equalled Italy's all-time record for the longest unbeaten run in men's international football after defeating France 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final on Tuesday. The victory extended La Roja's unbeaten streak to 37 matches across all competitions, matching the mark set by Italy between 2018 and 2021. Spain also booked its place in the World Cup final, where a victory would see the team establish a new world record for the longest unbeaten run by a men's international side.

The semi-final triumph also saw Spain create another historic milestone by becoming the first European nation to win eight consecutive knockout matches across the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship tournaments. The achievement underlines the consistency of the current Spanish squad, which has remained unbeaten in major competitions and international fixtures since March 2024. Spain's latest success came through a disciplined defensive display and clinical finishing against France in Dallas.

Spain's remarkable unbeaten run now consists of 28 victories and nine draws. The streak began after a narrow 1-0 friendly defeat to Colombia at London's Olympic Stadium in March 2024. Since then, the Spanish national team has navigated international friendlies, the UEFA Nations League, UEFA Euro 2024, and the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 without suffering another defeat. Their sustained form has drawn comparisons with Roberto Mancini's celebrated Italy side, whose 37-match unbeaten sequence was previously unmatched in European men's football.

The latest victory also moved Spain ahead of several legendary international teams in tournament consistency. Before Tuesday's win, the European record for consecutive knockout victories at the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship stood at seven, jointly held by Vittorio Pozzo's Italy team, which won consecutive World Cups in 1934 and 1938, and Spain's famed 2008–2012 generation that dominated European and world football with its possession-based style of play.

Among the longest unbeaten runs in men's international football, Italy and Spain now share the top position with 37 matches, while Argentina's 36-match unbeaten streak between 2019 and 2022 ranks third. Spain now has the opportunity to move clear of Italy by avoiding defeat in the World Cup final, where it will face the winner of the second semi-final between England and Argentina.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final is scheduled for Sunday and presents Spain with the chance to add another chapter to its footballing history. In addition to competing for the world title, La Roja will also be aiming to become the first men's international team to record a 38-match unbeaten run. With records already matched and new milestones within reach, Spain heads into the championship match carrying both momentum and the weight of history.
