Solbakken Explains Mass Rotation: Quick Turnaround Forces Norway to Rest Stars Against France
Norway coach Solbakken defends benching Haaland and Odegaard in France loss.
Norway head coach Stale Solbakken has defended his decision to leave star players Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard out of the starting lineup during his team's 4-1 defeat to France in their final FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match. Solbakken described the decision as a "no-brainer", explaining that player welfare and recovery were the priority after Norway had already secured qualification for the Round of 32 with a victory over Senegal earlier in the week.
Speaking after the match, Solbakken revealed that the decision to make 10 changes to the starting XI was taken following discussions with the team's medical staff, physiotherapists and several players. He said the short turnaround between Monday's 3-2 victory over Senegal and Friday's clash against France made it difficult for key players to recover fully. Although he acknowledged that supporters wanted to see Haaland and Odegaard in action, he insisted that preserving the squad for the knockout stage was the right choice.
Norway struggled without their leading stars as France dominated the contest. Ousmane Dembele produced a first-half hat-trick before Desire Doue added a fourth goal to seal a convincing victory for Les Bleus. Norway's only goal came through Thelo Aasgaard, while Jorgen Strand Larsen missed a crucial opportunity to reduce the deficit when his penalty was saved shortly after halftime, a moment that could have brought the score back to 3-2.

Before being rested, Haaland had been one of the standout performers of the tournament. The Manchester City striker scored four goals in Norway's opening two matches, netting twice in the 4-1 victory over Iraq before adding another brace in the win over Senegal that secured the team's progression. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has also played a key role in Norway's midfield throughout the group stage, making his absence against France particularly noticeable.
Despite the heavy defeat, Solbakken expressed confidence that the decision to rotate his squad would benefit Norway in the knockout rounds. He described both Haaland and Odegaard as committed team players who understood the importance of managing fitness during a demanding tournament schedule. The coach said the ultimate objective was to keep the squad fresh for the decisive matches rather than risk injuries in a game that would not affect qualification.
Norway will now travel to Dallas for a Round of 32 encounter against Ivory Coast on Tuesday. Solbakken described the African side as physically one of the strongest teams in the competition and predicted a closely contested match. He said Norway would need to perform at its highest level to progress further, expressing hope that the squad rotation against France would help his team produce a stronger display in the knockout stage.
