Sebastian Cossa Trade Rumors Heat Up; Detroit Seeks Roster Player for Top Goalie Prospect

Sebastian Cossa trade rumors intensify as Detroit seeks roster help; Edmonton and Philadelphia emerge as suitors.

Young goaltender Sebastian Cossa has emerged as one of the most discussed trade names in the NHL offseason, with growing speculation that the Detroit Red Wings may move on from their former first-round pick amid a crowded goaltending situation. Drafted 15th overall in 2021 and long considered Detroit’s future in goal, Cossa has played only a single NHL game so far, despite strong performances in the American Hockey League. The latest reports suggest that his development path has stalled within the organization, triggering serious trade interest from multiple teams.

According to NHL insiders, Detroit’s management is now open to trading Cossa but is setting a clear and firm asking price. The Red Wings are reportedly seeking either a current roster player who can contribute immediately or, alternatively, a second-round draft pick as part of any potential deal. The stance reflects the team’s desire to strengthen its NHL lineup right away rather than continue stockpiling future assets, especially as expectations rise around their playoff ambitions.

The situation has been shaped by Detroit’s evolving goaltending depth chart, which has reduced Cossa’s pathway to a regular NHL role. With established starter John Gibson occupying the top position and emerging prospects like Trey Augustine and Michal Postava gaining momentum within the system, Cossa’s standing has weakened significantly. Reports also indicate that Postava’s strong performances in the AHL playoffs further complicated Cossa’s chances, as he was not selected to start in key postseason games, fueling speculation about his long-term future in the organization.

Despite limited NHL exposure, Cossa’s performances at the AHL level have remained impressive, with consistent numbers that have kept his reputation intact across the league. However, structural constraints within Detroit’s roster mean he may soon become expendable. Analysts note that under NHL waiver rules, Cossa would need to clear waivers to return to the AHL next season, a scenario considered highly unlikely due to widespread interest from other franchises.

Two teams have already emerged as potential landing spots for the young goaltender. The Edmonton Oilers, who have faced consecutive Stanley Cup Final defeats largely attributed to goaltending instability, are reportedly exploring long-term solutions in goal. The Philadelphia Flyers are also mentioned as a possible destination, with the franchise seeking upgrades after inconsistent performances from their current options. Both teams are believed to view Cossa as a high-upside investment despite his limited NHL experience.

As discussions continue, Cossa’s situation has become one of the defining trade storylines of the NHL offseason. His combination of size, pedigree, and untapped potential makes him a valuable asset, even as questions remain about his readiness for a full-time NHL role. With Detroit prioritizing immediate roster improvement, a trade this summer now appears increasingly plausible, setting up a key decision point for both the player and the franchise.
