Savita Punia: India Has Real Chance Of Podium Finish At Hockey World Cup

India women's hockey team captain and star goalkeeper Savita Punia has expressed confidence in the team's prospects at the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup, saying their recent Nations Cup triumph has significantly strengthened their belief ahead of the global tournament. India head into the World Cup after winning the FIH Nations Cup, a result Savita believes demonstrated that the team can compete with the best sides in international hockey. The FIH Women's Hockey World Cup will be jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 14 to 30.

India have been placed in Pool D alongside China, England and South Africa. The Indian team will begin its campaign against China on August 16 in Amstelveen, with the opening match expected to provide an early test of the team's ability to compete against established international opponents. Savita highlighted the competitiveness of the Nations Cup and the quality of teams involved as an important factor in India's growing confidence. She said the tournament featured top international sides and that emerging from such a competitive field as champions gave the Indian squad a significant psychological boost.

The goalkeeper also pointed to the importance of winning a gold medal after a long gap in lifting the team's morale ahead of the World Cup. “Winning the FIH Nations Cup was a big achievement because all the top teams were there,” Savita said while speaking on JioStar. She described the tournament as highly competitive and said winning it had provided the team with a “huge boost”. According to her, the title success has strengthened the players' belief that they can challenge the strongest teams on the international stage.

India's World Cup campaign will nevertheless present a demanding challenge. Their pool includes China, England and South Africa, meaning the team will face opponents with significant international experience. India's best-ever performance at the Women's Hockey World Cup came in the inaugural 1974 edition, when the team finished fourth.

Their more recent campaigns have produced mixed results, with India finishing eighth in 2018 and ninth in 2022. The team will therefore be looking to improve on those performances and make a deeper run in the competition this time. For Savita and the Indian squad, the Nations Cup victory provides both momentum and belief as they enter the World Cup. The goalkeeper's assessment reflects a team that believes it has closed some of the gap with the world's leading sides. India will now attempt to convert that confidence into results when their campaign begins against China in Amstelveen on August 16.
