Saudi Arabia Joins Cricket League with Game-Changing ILT20 Rule for All Teams
Saudi Arabia enters global cricket with ILT20 deal requiring local players in every team.
Saudi Arabia marked its bold debut in mainstream cricket by forging a strategic alliance with the International League T20 (ILT20), a premier T20 franchise league in the UAE. This partnership, announced in Dubai, mandates that all six ILT20 franchises include at least one player from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, creating direct pathways for local talent into high-profile international cricket. Sanctioned by the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF) and licensed for both men's and women's competitions, the deal also paves the way for ILT20 matches to be hosted in Saudi Arabia starting in future seasons, amplifying the sport's footprint in the Gulf region.
The collaboration stems from SACF's approval of the DP World ILT20—backed by the Emirates Cricket Board—as an official T20 league, ensuring compliance with international standards while fostering cross-border opportunities. A key highlight is the upcoming ILT20 Season 4 Player Auction on October 1, 2025, where each franchise must secure at least one Saudi player, injecting fresh talent into the mix alongside global stars like Dwayne Bravo, Jonathan Trott, and David Warner, who have previously graced the league. This initiative not only elevates Saudi cricketers but also aligns with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 ambitions to diversify its economy through sports development and tourism.
ILT20 Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Saudi Arabia is a key part of the Gulf region, and its commitment to developing cricket is inspiring." Echoing this, SACF Chairman Prince Saud Bin Mishal Al-Saud emphasized the deal's role in building infrastructure, engaging fans, and creating a vibrant ecosystem for cricket in the country. The partnership builds on Saudi Arabia's recent hosting of a cricket festival earlier in September 2025, which served as a testing ground for the sport's growing popularity among local audiences.

David White, CEO of ILT20, hailed the alliance as a "significant step to grow the game across the Gulf region," highlighting its potential to bridge cultural and sporting divides. As cricket gains traction in non-traditional markets, this move positions Saudi Arabia as an emerging powerhouse, potentially hosting marquee matches and nurturing homegrown players who could compete on the world stage. The integration of Saudi talent into ILT20 franchises promises to enrich the league's diversity and competitiveness.
With ILT20 Season 4 kicking off on December 2, 2025, featuring 34 high-octane matches culminating in the final on January 4, 2026, cricket enthusiasts worldwide can anticipate a fresh infusion of Saudi flair. This historic partnership not only signals Saudi Arabia's serious investment in cricket but also underscores the sport's global expansion, blending tradition with innovation to captivate a new generation of fans in the heart of the Middle East.
