Sanath Jayasuriya Steps Down: Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup Disaster Claims its First Casualty
Jayasuriya confirms resignation as Sri Lanka coach after team's disappointing Super Eight exit.
Sri Lanka men’s cricket team head coach and former captain Sanath Jayasuriya has announced his decision to resign following the team’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2026. The island nation’s campaign ended at the Super Eight stage after consecutive defeats, including a narrow five-run loss to Pakistan on Saturday. Despite a strong start in the first round, Sri Lanka failed to reach the semifinals, losing all three of its Super Eight matches and leaving fans and officials disappointed.
Jayasuriya, whose contract runs until June 2026, revealed that he had been contemplating stepping down for several months. “I thought it was time to give it to someone else. About two months ago, during the England series, I had decided I wouldn’t stay in the job for long. I thought I’d leave on a good note in the World Cup, but I wasn’t able to do that, and I’m sad about it,” he told ESPNcricinfo. The coach said he would formally discuss his resignation with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and urged the board to find a replacement if possible.
The team’s final Super Eight match against Pakistan showcased a valiant effort from the players, particularly skipper Dasun Shanaka, whose late onslaught almost turned the game. With 28 runs needed off the final over, Shanaka struck three consecutive sixes and a four off Shaheen Shah Afridi before leaving the last delivery, misjudging a potential wide call. His 76 not out off 31 balls included eight sixes and two fours, yet Sri Lanka fell short at 206/7 against Pakistan’s 212/8.

Pakistan’s victory was not enough for the team to advance, as New Zealand qualified for the semifinals on a superior net run rate, joining table-toppers England from Group 2. Jayasuriya acknowledged the team’s effort but admitted that his side could not execute key strategies when it mattered. The narrow margins and missed opportunities highlighted the need for reflection and restructuring ahead of future tournaments.
The coach’s resignation comes at a critical juncture for Sri Lankan cricket, which has struggled to consistently challenge top-tier teams in the T20 format. Analysts note that the team’s batting depth and middle-order stability were exposed during the World Cup, with senior players unable to convert starts into match-defining innings. Jayasuriya’s departure is expected to trigger a search for a coach who can bring fresh strategies and strengthen the team’s competitive edge.
As Sri Lanka prepares for post-World Cup rebuilding, the focus will be on nurturing young talent and consolidating the squad for upcoming international fixtures. Jayasuriya’s tenure, marked by his legendary playing career and recent coaching challenges, concludes with a mix of pride and regret. The board is expected to announce interim arrangements soon, with the aim of ensuring continuity and stability in the team’s development.
