Sabastian Sawe Uses Sub-100g Shoe Designed From ‘Moonshot Brief’

Sabastian Sawe’s marathon shoe weighs under 100 grams, built from a moonshot brief.

Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe’s record-breaking performance at the London Marathon has drawn significant attention not just to his athletic achievement, but also to the ultra-lightweight racing footwear that played a key role in the event, with his shoes weighing less than 100 grams. Sawe clinched victory with a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds, a landmark performance that has intensified discussion around technological innovation in elite distance running. His performance, alongside similarly strong finishes by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa in the women’s category and Yomif Kejelcha in the men’s race, highlighted the competitive edge offered by next-generation racing equipment.

All three athletes wore the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3, a marathon racing shoe designed specifically for high-performance conditions. The model has attracted global attention for its extreme lightweight construction and energy-return design, positioning it among the most advanced running shoes ever produced for elite competition.

At just 97 grams, the shoe is reportedly lighter than a banana or a medium-sized apple, making it the first marathon racing shoe to break the sub-100-gram barrier. Sports technology analysts suggest that such weight reduction can contribute to improved running efficiency by reducing fatigue over long distances, particularly in elite endurance events.

According to reports, the development of the shoe was guided by what designers described as a “moonshot brief,” an engineering approach aimed at achieving radical performance improvements rather than incremental upgrades. The focus was on combining minimal weight with maximum propulsion efficiency, without compromising stability during high-speed marathon conditions. The London Marathon results have further intensified debate within athletics over the role of advanced footwear technology in competitive fairness and record-breaking performances.

While governing bodies continue to regulate certain aspects of shoe design, manufacturers have increasingly pushed boundaries in materials science and biomechanics. Sawe’s performance, alongside multiple record-breaking finishes in the same race, has strengthened the perception that footwear innovation is becoming a defining factor in elite marathon running. As competition continues to evolve, analysts expect further advancements in shoe technology to play a central role in shaping future race outcomes and performance benchmarks.
